Third Eye Chakra: Eye of the Soul

The third eye chakra, or ajna, has many other names. In fact, it’s called the eye of the soul and the seat of intuition. Located between the eyebrows, in the center of the forehead, it’s a deep blue, whirling vortex of foresight with some interesting associations:

The Third eye chakra is associated to the pineal gland in charge of regulating biorhythms, including sleep and wake time. Additionally, it is a gland located in the brain that is a center of attention because of its relationship with the perception and effect of light and altered or “mystical” states of consciousness. It’s positioned close to the optical nerves, and as such, sensitive to visual stimulations and changes in lighting.

Balancing the ajna chakra brings an ability to tune into intuition. Imbalances, or inactivity/overactivity, can look like an inability to create a vision for oneself. It’s an inability to see outside of your own existence and into the fabric of the wider existence. It’s almost finding that cosmic ‘aha’ moment when it comes into balance.

Opening or balancing ajna chakra is less about applying pressure, or making contact, than it is about redirecting energy. Think blood flow, concentration, and finding alignment throughout the body versus just the specific general area.

Each of these postures ties into sensation or activation of the third in some way. But from another perspective, third eye activation ties in much more clearly to other mediums. As well as sound and meditation.

AUM is the sound of the 6th chakra. Using this as a chant in a yoga class is a powerful kind of incantation. And so is using an intention with an ‘I am’ statement:

Meditation for the 3rd Eye

A meditation for addressing this particular chakra which is simple, can be done anywhere. And it’s something that makes for a great intro to meditation:

Preferably under sunlight or moonlight, sit comfortably with your eyes closed concentrating on your breathing as you internally focus at the area between your eyebrows while thinking of the color indigo. Be patient with yourself as this may take several too many attempts and always consciously know that you are integrating a major upgrade. This exercise will aid in opening your Third Eye and will help you see more clearly, remove any mental blockages and also improve your cognitive flexibility.

After an ajna-tuning meditation, finding a balance with this internal work and living in a world that doesn’t do this kind of work can be hard. to me, it can be confusing to see how people spend their time and energy. And disheartening. But the ultimate lesson from this work is that we can only care for ourselves at the end of the day.
