Greenify: Benefits of Plants in Indoor Spaces

benefits of plants in indoor spaces

Healthline provides a robust list of the (possible, caveat emphasized) benefits of caring for houseplants. Basically, ensure that you’re selecting nontoxic plants that won’t trigger allergies or irritate sensitivities. Keep an eye out for infestations. But overall, the benefits of plants, or bringing something that is living and breathing into your space, tend to improve every space they inhabit.

Reduce stress levels

Enhance attention spans (and boost productivity)

Reduce anxiety and other mental illnesses

Faster recovery times after surgery or illness

Improve indoor air quality

These are all awesome things, obviously. But to me, I love the ritual of caring for them. It’s a little reminder to be mindful and conscientious, and that creating a beautiful space takes time and dedication every day and not just when I feel like it. The benefits of plants goes further than just the surface level enjoyment.

Choosing Mindfully: Benefits of Plants

Before you dive in to greenifying, do a bit of research. Take into consideration how much effort you are willing to put into keeping your plants healthy and thriving; how much light they will receive; and most importantly if you have pets or small kids, what’s potentially toxic. For example, here are a few common house plants that can make your puppy (or human puppy) ill:

  • amaryllis
  • aloe vera
  • azalea
  • chrysanthemums
  • cyclamen
  • dieffenbachia
  • English ivy
  • jade
  • jonquils
  • lilies of many varieties
  • mistletoe
  • monstera deliciosa
  • philodendron
  • poinsettias
  • pothos
  • sago palm
  • umbrella plant

Also, if you or others in your home are prone to allergies or asthma, be mindful of plants that may trigger those conditions.

Design Your Space

Bringing living, breathing plants into your life is a fantastic way to improve your overall outlook. And, if you’re not in a place to care for real plants, there are benefits to fake plants as well!

Now that it’s warmer in Minnesota, I’m looking forward to barefoot walks and enhancing my proprioception. Adding greenery in all avenues of life can bring huge health benefits.
